To understand public impressions of advertising and advertising standards the Advertising Standards Canada (ASC) recently commissioned the Gandalf Group to conduct online surveys in Canada and the US. Interestingly, Canadian and US opinions are often divergent. For example Americans (80%) are more likely to find ads helpful than Canadians (63%). Yet Canadians are more likely to find ads truthful and inoffensive than their American counterparts. Between Canadians and Americans there is a different cultural perspective on the impact of advertising. Half of Canadians believe advertising shapes the value of society as compared with only one-third of Americans. Americans tend to see advertising more as entertainment. In my discussions with agency planners across Toronto I don’t generally get the sense that they question the strength of community media readership in Canada. The latest ComBase results support the ongoing strength of community newspaper readership. Nationally, nearly three-quarters of all adult Canadians (age 18+) read their community newspaper. In a tongue and cheek display of the newspaper as the ‘must have hand-held device of 2011’ Newspapers Canada further extols the virtue of the traditional newspaper. Earlier this week I had the pleasure of participating in the American Marketing Association (AMA) – Toronto Branch planning session, to develop a strategic vision into 2013/14.
